Mom Says Clean Up Your Mess!
Chris Zimmer : Jun 13.2007Most people learn the lesson of having to clean up one mess before making another from their mothers at a young age. Redcorp apparently still hasn’t taken this one to heart.
They say that they can’t (or won’t) clean up the ongoing acid mine drainage pollution from the Tulsequah Chief and Big Bull mines until they re-open the Tulsequah Chief. Given their lack of financing, continued delays and the skeptical reception their barging plan is getting from the people of Juneau and US and Alaska agencies, mine development is certainly in doubt.

So, what is the cleanup plan if the mine doesn’t open? How can we trust Redcorp to operate and cleanup a new mine if they haven’t cleaned up the old one?
We are working with the Center for Science and Public Participation to produce a report on cleanup options for the two mine sites. We brought Stu Levit of CSP2 to Juneau a couple weeks ago to educate local citizens, fishermen, elected officials and conservation groups to the cleanup issues at Tulsequah Chief and Big Bull. We have launched a Cleanup Petition on this website and we urge people to sign as soon as possible. Help us remind Redcorp about a lesson they should have learned long ago.
